Character name: Takamura Mamoru
Series: Hajime no Ippo: Rising
Canon point: Following the end of episode 21. He's had his second world championship belt for about a week.
History: Takamura's history is somewhat ironic and somewhat tragic for a boxer since he not only didn't grow up with an interest in the sport, but he also didn't grow up in an environment where it was an "only option" like many other boxers. Instead, Takamura is the second son of a large and well off family. While not a lot is known about Takamura's interests while young, it's clear that he was into sports of some kind as he kept his body in prime physical condition (his older brother who played Rugby was the same). It's also known that Takamura always had a short temper and would often get into fights at the slightest provocation, developing quite a reputation among the delinquents in the city. Then, at one of his brother's rugby games, he heard some people talking badly about his brother. Takamura went on a rampage, seriously injuring several people. It was only through the intervention of his father that he wasn't taken to prison. Unfortunately, this final act causes Takamura's father to sever ties with him.
It's not too long after this when Takamura meets Coach Kamogawa, the latter noticing Takamura beating up on some local thugs in a street brawl. Right away, the experienced coach could see the untapped potential in Takamura and offered to give him a place to fight where he'll actually get recognition for it. Takamura's dubious at first, but goes along since he has nothing better to do. Takamura quickly grows impatient with the coach's training methods, but sticks with the training due to the coach's tenacity. In his debut match, having never fought or even sparred in a boxing ring, Takamura takes down a much more experienced fighter in the first round thanks to the coach's training. He drops out of high school to pursue a career as a professional boxer. From that moment on, he's hooked and vows to take on the world.
From here, Takamura's career has been rocketing skyward upwards and gaining momentum. Not only is he undefeated but all of his victories have been by knockout. Two thirds of those victories have happened in the first round. After reaching the world stage, Takamura declared that he would conquer six different weight classes, gaining the world title in each. He has taken two so far.
It was through Takamura that Aoki, Kimura, and Ippo came to be at the Kamogawa Gym. The first two were delinquents without direction and Takamura gave them a goal in trying to defeat him (after beating them each with a single punch). With Ippo, Takamura found him being bullied along the route where he does his road work. After dispatching the bullies, Ippo says he wants to take up boxing to protect himself and become stronger. Not sure the shy, introverted Ippo has what it takes, Takamura gives him a seemingly impossible task to complete. However, Ippo shows how determined he is and manages to complete Takamura's task. Since then, Takamura has often made the claim that he "discovered" Ippo.
Personality: Takamura's a very loud, brash, and some times abrasive person. He's argumentative and likes to have things his way so he can also be extremely bossy. Being the "star" of the Kamogawa Gym, Takamura is used to all the other boxers doing as he says either out of respect or fear and that power has certainly gone to his head. He's all too willing to reign with an "iron fist" and use violence and coercion to get what he wants. Takamura is also a bit of a perv. He's been known to hit on female announcers at the end of matches, has a large porn collection in his apartment, and even managed to seduce a female reporter who came to the gym to interview him.
Despite these rather large and glaring issues, that's not all there is to Takamura's personality. He's a very proud man who takes being a boxer very seriously. He has dedicated his life to it and is willing to put his body through hell to achieve victory. Because of this, he not only won't stand for anyone belittling the sport but he also doesn't like boxers who get into it for what he views are stupid or unworthy reasons. In the beginning if Ippo's career, he stated that part of his reasons for taking up boxing was to make friends, something that Takamura didn't approve of at all and knew Ippo would be destroyed if that was his only motivation.
Also, while he abuses his kohai quite a bit, Takamura is also protective of them in a "big brother" kind of way. He is willing to help point out there weaknesses (often in the form of ridicule) as well as help them to improve (by beating on them).
Takamura also has a father/son relationship with Coach Kamogawa. Unlike his actual father, the coach was the first authority figure in Takamura's life to really approve of or put value in what he was good at, fighting. That doesn't mean the two don't butt heads a lot of the time since Takamura's not exactly the most "respectable" person. Still, neither he nor Kamogawa would have gotten as far as they have without each other and there's a certain amount of unspoken respect that Takamura has for the coach. This is best shown when, after having won his championship belts, he gives them to the coach since they hold more value to him. Takamura doesn't need the belts themselves, simply the title and recognition that he's the best.
Pound for pound, Takamura has been shown to be the strongest fighter in the series thus far. Despite being of average intelligence normally (and sometimes lacking in "common sense") he has a genius level intellect when it comes to boxing and is often used by the writer to point out various strategies and insights. He's also extremely gifted physically. Coach Kamogawa even states that Takamura was strong enough to take the national title even without training. While he's a natural brawler with superb fighting instincts, Kamogawa tempered this with training that hammered in technique so that Takamura is an extremely well rounded fighter in all areas. During a sparring match with Sendo, Takamura was able to demonstrate several high level boxing techniques with ease.
